Chinese Manufacturer Delivers 50,000 Seats to Senegal's National Stadium, Preparing for 2026 Youth Olympics
Africa's first ever Youth Olympic Games are just around the corner, and Senegal's oldest national stadium is getting a major upgrade to host the historic event. At the center of that upgrade is a massive seating project from Chinese seating manufacturer Leading Sports, which has delivered 50,000 custom, all-weather seats to the Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor in Dakar, turning the 40-year-old venue into a world-class facility ready to welcome athletes and fans from around the world.

The Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor, originally built with Chinese aid back in 1985, has been the heart of Senegalese sports for decades. But as the country prepared to host the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympics, the first ever Olympic-style event held in Africa, the venue needed a major upgrade. The old seats were worn out, they couldn't withstand the harsh West African climate, and they didn't meet international standards for major sporting events. So the Chinese government, as part of a major aid package to Senegal, funded a full renovation of the venue, including a complete replacement of all the seating.
Leading Sports, one of the world's largest stadium seating manufacturers, won the contract to deliver the new seats, beating out several Western competitors to get the job. The company customized their Bowen model seats specifically for the Senegalese climate, designing them to withstand extreme heat, heavy rain, and high humidity, without fading or breaking down. The seats are made from high-quality injection-molded plastic, with waterproof bolts and caps that prevent water from eroding the structure, so they can last for decades, even in the harsh West African weather.
All of the seats also passed strict international testing, including aging tests, high and low temperature tests, and impact tests, to make sure they could meet the standards of the International Olympic Committee. They also feature a stackable design, which made shipping and installation much easier, cutting down on transportation costs and installation time. The company also sent a team of expert installers to Senegal to oversee the project, making sure that the seats were installed correctly, and that they met all the safety and quality standards. A single all-weather Stadium chair from Leading Sports is designed to last for more than 20 years, even in extreme climates, which is perfect for a venue that will be used for community sports and events long after the Youth Olympics are over.
The project wasn't without its challenges. The company had to deal with long international shipping times, customs delays, and coordinating with local workers to install the seats on site. But they were able to overcome all of those challenges, delivering the seats on time, and completing the installation before the deadline, so the venue would be ready for the Youth Olympics. The project is part of a larger aid package that includes renovations to four other stadiums across Senegal, part of China's commitment to supporting sports development across Africa.
This project is just one example of how Chinese seating manufacturers are taking over the global market, especially in emerging economies. Companies like Leading Sports are able to deliver high-quality seats at a much lower cost than Western manufacturers, with faster delivery times and better support for local projects. That's made them the go-to choice for countries across Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, which are building new stadiums to host international events, but don't have the budget for expensive Western seating. A single Stadium chair from Leading Sports costs about 35% less than a comparable seat from a European manufacturer, but it still meets all the same international standards, which makes it perfect for these emerging markets.

The new seats have already transformed the stadium. Before the renovation, the venue had old, worn-out benches that were uncomfortable for fans, and they were starting to fall apart. Now, the stadium has brand new, comfortable seats that give fans a great view of the action, and that will last for decades. When the Youth Olympics kick off in 2026, the 50,000 fans who fill the stadium will get to experience the game in comfort, thanks to these new seats. And long after the games are over, the seats will continue to serve the Senegalese people, supporting local sports, community events, and national team matches, for generations to come.
