ESSEN, Germany — This year’s Red Dot Design Award, one of the most prestigious design awards in the world, has honored Spanish furniture manufacturer Actiu for its innovative modular waiting chair design, the TNK 500 AUREA, which combines ergonomics, sustainability, and flexibility in a sleek, modern package.

The TNK 500 AUREA, which was designed by Alegre Design, beat more than 7,000 entries from 54 countries to win the Red Dot: Best of the Best award, the highest honor in the competition, for its innovative design that reimagines what a waiting chair can be.

“ This is an incredible honor for us,” said Ignasi Cases, CEO of Actiu. “The Red Dot Award is one of the most respected design awards in the world, and to win the Best of the Best award for our waiting chair design is a testament to the hard work of our team, who worked for years to develop this innovative product. It’s a recognition that good design can make a real difference in people’s lives.”

The TNK 500 AUREA is a modular waiting chair system that allows facilities to mix and match different modules to create a custom seating solution that fits their space. The system includes single seats, double seats, corner units, and tables, all of which can be arranged in any configuration, from straight rows to curved clusters to cozy nooks.

The chair also features an aluminum frame that is 100% recyclable, paired with upholstery made from recycled plastic bottles, making it fully sustainable and meeting the EU’s new circular economy regulations. The ergonomic design of the chair provides excellent lumbar support, reducing back pain for people who spend long periods waiting, and the materials are easy to clean and disinfect, making it perfect for healthcare and public spaces.

“ The TNK 500 AUREA is a perfect example of what modern design can be,” said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Design Award. “It’s innovative, it’s sustainable, it’s ergonomic, and it’s beautiful. It reimagines the waiting chair, turning it from a simple, functional piece of furniture into a flexible, sustainable solution that can adapt to any space. That’s why it deserved the highest honor in this year’s competition.”

The award is a major milestone for Actiu, which has been working to position itself as a leader in sustainable, innovative public seating. The company has already seen strong demand for the TNK 500 AUREA, with orders from hospitals, airports, and office buildings across Europe, and the award is expected to drive even more demand.

“ Since we launched the TNK 500 AUREA, we’ve seen incredible demand from clients across Europe,” said Cases. “But this Red Dot Award is going to take it to the next level, because it’s a recognition of the quality and innovation of our design. It’s going to help us expand into new markets, like North America and Asia, where clients are looking for innovative, sustainable seating solutions.”

The Red Dot Award is the latest in a series of awards that the TNK 500 AUREA has won, including the IF Design Award and the Good Design Award. The chair has also been praised by sustainability experts, for its use of recycled materials and its circular design, which allows it to be fully disassembled and recycled at the end of its lifespan.

“ This chair is exactly what the waiting chair industry needs,” said Carlos Alegre, head of Alegre Design. “We wanted to create a product that was good for people, and good for the planet. The Red Dot Award recognizes that, and it shows that the industry is moving towards more sustainable, human-centered design.”

According to industry analysts, the award is a sign of the growing importance of design in the waiting chair industry, as customers increasingly look for products that are not just functional, but also beautiful, sustainable, and innovative. Over the past five years, the number of waiting chair designs entering the Red Dot Award has more than doubled, as manufacturers focus more on design.

“ Design is becoming a key differentiator in the waiting chair industry,” said Sarah Jones, an industry analyst at Future Market Report. “Customers are no longer just looking for the cheapest chair—they’re looking for chairs that are well-designed, that are sustainable, that improve the user experience. Awards like the Red Dot Award help customers identify the best products, and they drive innovation in the industry.”

Actiu plans to use the award to expand its global reach, bringing the TNK 500 AUREA to new markets across the world. The company is also working on new innovative waiting chair designs, as it continues to push the boundaries of what public seating can be.
