Finland's "Phenomenon-Based Learning": How Mobile Desks and Chairs Break Down Subject Barriers

In a primary school in Helsinki, there are no fixed classroom signs, only mobile learning communities. The success of this "phenomenon-based learning" method relies heavily on a complementary mobile school desk and chair system—the physical key to breaking down subject barriers.

These desks and chairs are equipped with silent omnidirectional wheels, allowing them to be moved with one hand. In science class, they combine to form experimental tables; in history class, they form round tables for discussion; in art class, they become easels. Even more ingeniously, the legs of the desks have built-in storage compartments, allowing students to carry their personal belongings, achieving "desk moves with the student." This design makes "rotating classrooms" effortless, truly realizing interdisciplinary learning.

The Finnish National Board of Education believes that a flexible physical environment is a prerequisite for educational reform. When school desks and chairs are no longer fixed obstacles, the flow of knowledge becomes unimpeded. This concept of "mobile classrooms" provides valuable international experience for interdisciplinary teaching in China's new curriculum reform.
