ISTANBUL — For international medical travelers flying into Istanbul, the first step of their healthcare journey has long been a stressful one: navigating the busy airport, finding their way to the hospital, and waiting for transfers, often with little support or information. But this week, Liv Hospital, one of Turkey’s leading private healthcare providers, opened a brand new international patient lounge at Istanbul Airport, designed to make that first step as smooth and comfortable as possible—with premium waiting chair solutions at its core.

The new lounge, which is located in the airport’s international arrivals area, is designed to serve as a dedicated hub for Liv Hospital’s international patients, providing them with a comfortable place to wait for their transfers, meet with their care coordinators, and get the support they need before they head to the hospital. At the heart of the lounge are custom waiting chairs, designed specifically for the unique needs of medical travelers, many of whom are recovering from treatment or dealing with mobility issues.

“Medical travelers often arrive tired, stressed, and sometimes in pain, after a long flight,” said a spokesperson for Liv Hospital. “We wanted to create a space where they can rest, relax, and feel taken care of, before they even get to the hospital. That’s why we invested in such high-quality waiting chair solutions—because we know that a comfortable seat can make a huge difference for someone who’s just traveled thousands of miles for care.”

The custom waiting chairs feature ergonomic design with extra lumbar support, perfect for patients with back pain or mobility issues, and wide armrests that make it easier for patients to sit down and stand up. The chairs are also spaced out to provide plenty of personal space, with small side tables where patients can place their medications, luggage, or drinks.

The lounge also includes a range of other amenities, including interpreter services, free Wi-Fi, and refreshments, as well as dedicated staff who help patients with their luggage, documentation, and transfers to the hospital. The lounge staff also coordinate with the hospital’s international patient center, to ensure that everything is ready for the patient when they arrive, reducing wait times and stress.

The launch of the lounge comes as Turkey’s medical tourism industry is booming, with more than 1 million international patients visiting the country each year for cosmetic surgery, cancer treatment, and other medical procedures. As the industry grows, hospitals are increasingly looking for ways to improve the patient experience, from the moment the patient lands in the country to the moment they leave.

“Medical tourism is a very competitive industry, and patients have a lot of options,” said Dr. Ahmet Yilmaz, a medical tourism expert in Istanbul. “Hospitals that can offer a better experience, from start to finish, are the ones that are going to win. Small things like a comfortable waiting chair in the airport lounge can make a huge difference in how patients feel about their experience, and whether they recommend the hospital to their friends and family.”

Since the lounge opened, patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many patients saying that it made their trip much less stressful. “I was so worried about navigating the airport by myself, after my surgery,” said Maria Garcia, a patient from Spain who was the first to use the lounge. “But when I arrived, there was someone there to meet me, and I got to sit down in this comfortable waiting chair and rest for a little while, before they took me to the hospital. It made everything so much easier.”

Liv Hospital plans to expand the lounge over the next year, adding more seats and new amenities, as the number of international patients continues to grow. The company is also looking to roll out similar lounges at other airports across Turkey, to serve patients flying into other cities.

According to industry analysts, the trend of hospital airport lounges is set to grow across the medical tourism industry, as more and more hospitals look to improve the patient experience. Over the next five years, analysts predict that more than 30% of top medical tourism providers will have dedicated airport lounges, with premium waiting chair solutions as a core part of the offering.
